What Alexander Zverev has achieved this year that only five players have since 2008.

Alexander Zverev’s 2025 campaign was a largely indifferent one, having claimed just one ATP Tour-level title.

Zverev’s sole triumph came at the Munich Open back in April, where he overcame Ben Shelton in the final to hoist his 24th career trophy in front of a home crowd.

He recorded three runner-up finishes this year, the first of which was at the Australian Open in January, with the German losing to Jannik Sinner in the title bout.

Outside of his run in Melbourne, Zverev managed to reach the semifinals at Roland Garros, but suffered early exits at both Wimbledon and the US Open.

While his season has been underwhelming, the 28-year-old has managed to achieve a feat only five others have managed since 2008.

Though his level has fluctuated throughout the season, Zverev has remained within the world’s top three since January.

He started the year as the world number two, but was ultimately surpassed by Carlos Alcaraz in April.

Zverev, Alcaraz and Sinner have all kept their place in the top three for the entirety of the season.

As per Luca Brancher on X, formerly known as Twitter, 2025 marks the first time this has happened since 2008.

That year, the ‘big three’ of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic were immovable in the top three spots.

Sinner spent the vast majority of 2025 as the world number one, but Alcaraz overtook the Italian in September after beating him in the US Open final.

Zverev finished the year in third with 5160 ATP points, just above fourth-placed Djokovic, who totalled 4,830 points.

Zverev is in the prime years of his career now, but has still yet to win a Grand Slam; the one feat that has eluded him since turning professional in 2013.

He has come agonisingly close on a number of occasions, having made finals at the 2020 US Open, the 2024 French Open, and this year’s Australian Open.

It has not happened for him yet, and it is only going to get tougher for Zverev as both Sinner and Alcaraz continue to get better.

The 2026 Australian Open could provide a golden opportunity for him should the growing pains of Alcaraz’s coaching change lead to an early exit.

Time is running out for Zverev, who may finish his career as the greatest player never to win a Grand Slam title.
