Novak Djokovic’s dream of winning his eighth Wimbledon title was shattered against Jannik Sinner in the semifinals, at the end of a match in which the Serbian legend never gave the feeling of being able to prevail. The former world number 1 – who was not even at the top of his shape due to a muscle problem suffered in the quarterfinals – had created more problems for the Italian ace at Roland Garros, while on this occasion he passively accepted the defeat without ever reacting.
The 38-year-old from Belgrade has reached the semifinals in all three Grand Slam tournaments played in 2025, but it cannot be enough for a player of his caliber. As he himself admitted during his press conference, his shape is no longer what it was a few years ago and it is impossible to beat rivals like Sinner and Alcaraz without being in the best condition.
Djokovic doesn’t give up yet
Nole will recharge his batteries now and try to be ready for the US Open, the last Major of the season, but the collective feeling is that he missed his last chance to make tennis history again. Sinner and Alcaraz have entered a new dimension and their level is much higher than that of all their opponents, including Djokovic.
On the latest episode of his podcast, Australian legend Rennae Stubbs made huge prediction about Novak’s future: “We all thought Wimbledon was his best chance to win another Grand Slam title, but he failed to achieve this goal. I believe that his next huge goal will be the 2026 Australian Open, a tournament that has always been special for him. He had one of the worst experiences of his life in Melbourne a few years ago, but he won ten times there. I do not exclude that the next edition of the AO could also be the last tournament of his career.”
The 24-time Grand Slam champion defeated Alcaraz in the quarterfinals in Melbourne this year, but suffered an injury and had to retire during the semifinal against Sascha Zverev.
