Novak Djokovic confirms the real reason why he has not retired from tennis yet.

Novak Djokovic does not appear to have any definitive plans to retire from tennis just yet.

Djokovic has only won one ATP title in 2025, which was actually a historic one for the Serbian that came at the Geneva Open.

Despite reaching four Grand Slam semifinals this year, Djokovic has continually been beaten by Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

As a result, many questions have been raised about whether Djokovic could retire from tennis, but he has now suggested that there is another reason why he is continually motivated to play.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion is now gearing up to compete at the inaugural Hellenic Championships in Athens, and Djokovic has spoken to Greek outlet Sdna about his current status.

Djokovic won an Olympic gold medal for the first time last year, and he was asked about how he found the motivation to continue competing after completing nearly every tennis achievement there is.

The 38-year-old responded by explaining that his current motivation is more than just winning titles anymore.

“Good question… Many people thought that after the Olympics, after winning the gold medal, I would end my career,” said Djokovic. “However, I don’t play tennis just for the achievements.

“Obviously the achievements are a big part of my motivation, but I also play tennis because I really enjoy the competition. I enjoy the process and what tennis brings to me personally, to my family, but also what I bring to tennis, as long as I remain an active professional player.”

Djokovic added, “I know that as long as I compete, there will be attention from the tennis world. I know this and I have the responsibility, but I don’t mind, I enjoy it. I enjoy contributing to the prosperity, popularity and development of our sport.

“There are some other reasons that are private and subtle for me, but also business reasons. So, there are different reasons that make me continue competing. It’s not just about the successes.

“When you manage to complete the achievements with the Olympic gold medal, yes, it’s a little strange to return to the tournaments and do it all over again. At the same time, of course, it’s also a source of inspiration, because you feel that you still have the motivation and the thirst to go for more.”

Djokovic is now gearing up for his return to the match court, as he looks to win his 101st career title in Athens.

However, it will not be easy for the world number five, with Djokovic facing Alejandro Tabilo in his opening match.

This could be a challenge for him, as Tabilo is unbeaten against Djokovic after playing him twice before.

Some of the other potential threats in the draw include Lorenzo Musetti, who is still bidding to qualify for the ATP Finals, Brandon Nakashima, Nuno Borges and Sebastian Korda.

There has also been a lot of speculation over whether Djokovic will play the ATP Finals, but latest reports suggest that he does plan to compete in Turin this year.
