Naomi Osaka’s former coach states what he thinks Emma Raducanu’s big problem has been.

Emma Raducanu has struggled to build upon her historic 2021 US Open triumph.

Raducanu became the first qualifier ever to win a major when she emerged victorious at Flushing Meadows that year, aged 18.

Since then, however, the Briton has failed to win a title, and has not advanced past the fourth round at any Grand Slam.

She has dealt with a number of injury issues, however, and in 2025 Raducanu enjoyed a largely healthy campaign, during which she made her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal.

The world number 29 has shown some positive signs this season, and looks to have solved a big problem that Serena Williams’ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, suggested was holding her back.

In an interview with ITV, Mouratoglou said of Raducanu: “I think her potential is very big. I mean, she’s won a Grand Slam, but after that, it was very difficult for her.

“I think [she had had] way too many coaches working with her. I think if you look at all the very successful tennis players, you need to follow a path for a few years to build yourself through a project.

Whenever you change coaches, you change your project. If you change your project every six months, it’s too difficult.

“So, for her, the big challenge is to trust someone for a period that is long enough, so she can really build something solid in her game for the future. If she’s able to do this, she’s a great player. No doubt.”

Raducanu had changed her coach several times over the course of her young career so far, and has made more switch-ups this year.

In January, Raducanu stopped working with Nick Cavaday and soon after teamed up with Andy Murray‘s former coach, Mark Petchey.

Then, during the North American hard-court swing, Raducanu appointed Francisco Roig as her head coach, who had previously worked with Rafael Nadal.

She has since stuck with Roig, and after ending her 2025 season early, she confirmed that she will keep the Spaniard in her corner heading into 2026.
