Andy Murray’s new passion after tennis retirement is revealed – and he’s ‘usually winning.
Andy Murray is claimed to be highly competitive when it comes to Fantasy Premier League, having stepped away from professional tennis 18 months ago.
British wheelchair star, Andy Lapthorne, has disclosed that the three-time Grand Slam winner is just as formidable at the online game as he was during his own playing days. The subject of managing a fantasy football (FPL) side while in Melbourne for the Australian Open came up during BBC Radio 5 Live’s Tennis Breakfast on the sixth day of the tournament.
Lapthorne revealed: “We’re in some serious leagues with some of the tennis boys that take it very seriously.” When presenter Gigi Salmon asked him who was the most dedicated, Lapthorne didn’t hesitate: “Andy Murray, by far, he’s playing a different game to everyone else. Usually, when we play, he’s winning.
Murray has shared his FPL achievements on social media in the past, as well. Several months prior to confirming his retirement from tennis, the Scottish star took to X (formerly Twitter) to celebrate victory in a mini-league featuring numerous fellow tennis professionals.
He shared an image of his squad and the league table, writing: “Team for the final gameweek of the season, with it all wrapped up. Thanks for another season, lads, you are all absolutely clueless.”
Murray mentioned several current and former players in his post, including his brother Jamie, along with Cameron Norrie, Dominic Inglot, Jonny O’Mara, Ken Skupski, Lapthorne, Luke Bambridge, Neal Skupski and Ryan Peniston.
He also discussed their Fantasy Premier League rivalry from the previous year. Murray pointed out Neal Skupski as another competitor who takes FPL very seriously. The Scotsman said: “He puts more time in than anyone else. His knowledge isn’t that high-level, but he will spend hours on the apps and the websites, trying to get an edge, but he never manages to win.”
