Alexander Zverev beats compatriot Altmaier at Munich Open

Alexander Zverev cruised past Daniel Altmaier in Wednesday’s all-German encounter at the Munich Open, winning 6-3 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals.

Zverev, who won the 2017 and 2018 stagings of the tournament and is seeded first for this year’s edition, needed just 80 minutes to seal his second victory of the week.

The world number three had to navigate some early pressure on his own serve, but a break four games into the opener was enough to give him the lead, with Altmaier’s only break point of the first set coming in the opening game.

Altmaier put more pressure on at the start of the second set and did get his break, but Zverev immediately hit back to level things, and that setback seemed to do for Altmaier’s chances.

Back-to-back breaks in games five and seven pulled Zverev into an unassailable lead, and he converted his fourth match point to book a last-eight meeting with Tallon Griekspoor or wildcard Yannick Hanfmann.

Second seed Ben Shelton is also into the quarter-finals, having beaten Botic van de Zandschulp 7-6 (7-1) 6-3 on Wednesday, two days after he saved three match points to beat Borna Gojo in the first round.

Meanwhile, both Stefanos Tsitsipas and Holger Rune progressed to the last eight at the Barcelona Open.

The former overcame Sebastian Korda 7-6 (7-4) 6-4, while Rune needed a comeback to eliminate Sebastian Baez, triumphing 4-6 6-1 6-2.
