Andy Murray touts a current Wimbledon 2025 star as the most probable candidate to become, what he called, the “greatest athlete of all time.”
A three-time major winner in tennis, two-time gold medal-winning Olympian, and former world No.1-ranked player, Murray left a distinguished legacy in sport but continues his involvement in his post-playing days as a coach.
One of his pupils remains on course to compete at the ongoing Wimbledon championships right now in London.

Novak Djokovic is a 24-time major winner in tennis
Andy Murray selected a player he’s coached, Novak Djokovic, as a suitable contender for the ‘Greatest Athlete’ ever.
Djokovic has won the sport’s majors — the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open — an extraordinary 24 times. He has also come agonizingly close to scooping all four trophies in a single season, as he’s won three of the four prizes in the same calendar year twice.
At Wimbledon so far this year, Djokovic defeated Alexandre Muller three sets to one in the opening round, breezed past Dan Evans in straight sets in the second round, and then trounced Miomir Kecmanovic in the third round. Djokovic was then forced to come-from-behind in the Round of 16 to beat Alex de Minaur three sets to one, which set up his quarterfinal clash against Flavio Cobolli on Wednesday.
Ahead of that date, Murray lavished the highest praise on Djokovic:
“Novak broke many records in 2023 and the last thing on his bucket list at the time was to win the Olympics,” said Murray to The Mirror.
Murray said Djokovic’s run in 2023, in which he won the Australian Open, French Open, US Open, ahead of his success at the 2024 Olympics, “was an incredible achievement.”
He then said: “So for me and his team, it’s about trying to find that motivation to keep going and pushing for more.”
Murray believes Djokovic has surpassed other GOATs in men’s tennis, Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer
“Novak has in the last few years cemented himself as the best tennis player of all time, certainly of his generation, with the records that he’s achieved. These next couple of years, I think he maybe already has a legitimate claim to be the best athlete of all time.”
He finished: “But I think if he can go out as a 38, 39 year old and win more Slams, and beat [Carlos] Alcaraz and [Jannik] Sinner in big matches, he’s got a claim to be the best athlete of all time and I think that’s exciting for me and his team to be part of that.”
