Inside Anna Kournikova and Enrique Iglesias’ ‘Private’ Life in Miami — and Why ‘It Works for Them’ (Exclusive Source)

In January, Kournikova was seen in public for the first time in two years during an outing in Miami

Anna Kournikova and Enrique Iglesias are enjoying their privacy.

Amid a sighting of Kournikova, 43, in Miami on Jan. 25 — the first time the former tennis star has been spotted in public in two years — a source close to the couple tells PEOPLE that Kournikova and Iglesias are happily raising their children out of the public eye.

The couple are both happy, fulfilled and living their lives in Miami without the frequent intrusion of photographers, the source tells PEOPLE.

“They both love being parents and spend their time raising their children,” the insider says. “There is not another Miami couple more private than they are. It works for them.”

Both Iglesias, 49, and Kournikova “never looked for the spotlight” even at the height of their careers, “and that attitude has just gotten stronger since they have had children,” says the source. “They love being parents.”

The couple share twins Lucy and Nicholas, born in December 2017, and Mary, born in February 2020.

When Kournikova was spotted in January, the former model and athlete was in a wheelchair. Sources close to her say the “tennis injuries” she sustained during her career — which ultimately forced her to retire at age 21 — “have plagued her” since.

“She has had major pain for years due to her tennis career and rigid training her whole life,” another source tells PEOPLE.

Kournikova often played tennis while fighting a great deal of pain, according to the insider, and at one point the pain in her back became so bad she was unable to tie her shoes. She moved to Miami in 2003 and wanted to see if she could find a life outside of tennis.

The source tells PEOPLE that Kournikova once referred to her first years post-tennis was full of “soul-searching” in Miami, which included long walks on the beach and intense physical therapy, as well as meaningful time connecting with her family.

The pair met in 2001 on the set of the singer’s “Escape” music video and they became an official couple shortly after. Iglesias and Kournikova have kept their two-decade-long relationship out of the spotlight for the most part, but on occasion, they will share rare glimpses into their family life on social media.

In a 2023 interview with PEOPLE, Iglesias recalled meeting the former athlete and spoke about how they “grew up” together in the spotlight, which set a solid foundation for their relationship.

“[The video changed my life] in ways that I didn’t even think about,” Iglesias said of meeting his longtime partner. “When we met — although she came from the sports world — in a way, we kind of got each other. She knew what my world was like. I kind of knew what her world was like. So that understanding helped a lot.”
