She Suddenly Disappeared, Crushed by Świątek. Her Return Announced, People Are in Disbelief
Camila Giorgi played the last match of her professional career in March of last year. Her opponent was… Iga Świątek, and the clash in Miami ended with a spectacular victory for the Pole, 6–1, 6–1. After that defeat, the 33-year-old Italian said goodbye to professional tennis and moved to Argentina. As it turns out, she will soon be seen in a completely new role.
Originally from Macerata, Giorgi was once ranked in the top 30 of the WTA rankings. She won four WTA tournaments, the last of which was in Mérida in 2023. However, she never achieved significant success in Grand Slam events. Only once, in 2018, did she manage to reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.
At the beginning of 2024, she had fallen out of the world’s top 100 and was no longer able to compete on equal footing with top players. She was defeated by the likes of Maria Sakkari, Victoria Azarenka, and “our own” Iga Świątek. As it turned out, the match against the Pole marked the end of her professional career. Giorgi’s decision to retire was quite a surprise.
