Queensland Tennis Ace Ash Barty honoured with new park.
A tennis-themed park inspired by former world number one, Wimbledon Champion and local mum, Ash Barty, has opened in Springfield.
The retired tennis champion turned down a statue to commemorate her sporting achievements, instead asking for a park to inspire her local community.
“Encouraging children to be active and play is a passion of mine, and I can’t wait for local families, including my own, to visit this beautiful new space,” said Ash.
The Ash Barty Playground features a half tennis court and rebound wall for children to practice in the same way that Ash did when she was growing up nearby.
From above, the park’s winding footpaths create the shape of a larger-than-life tennis ball.
The park also features a dry creek bed, nature play areas, shaded seating, extended playground and gardens to provide a variety of activities to entertain children.
The space was designed with the help of Ash, who hopes to put the park to good use with her son Hayden.
“Being able to work with the Queensland Government and other project partners to create a park and playground for local families to enjoy is special and I want to thank the government for giving me this opportunity,” she said.
The project was funded with $525,000 from the Queensland Government and built in collaboration with Ipswich City Council.
Ash says she is pleased to be able to give something back to her community, even though her playing days are behind her.
“I have always loved my home and being part of the Springfield community,” she said.
