The road to Bologna, Italy continues this week with the 2025 Davis Cup qualifiers 2nd round (13-14 September).
After the enthralling US Open to wrap up the Grand Slam season, attention for some of the top tennis stars turns to representing their nations for a spot in the Davis Cup Final 8 from 18–23 November 2025.
Following the first round of qualifiers at the start of the year, 14 teams are still in contention to join hosts Italy at the finals. They will play home-or-away ties over five matches: two singles on the first day, followed by one doubles and two singles rubbers on day two.
Whoever wins the most matches in their respective tie advances to the Final 8 in November, for a chance to be crowned world champions of men’s tennis.

2025 Davis Cup qualifiers 2nd round – Will Carlos Alcaraz play? The big names playing for their nation
With Spain hosting Denmark on the clay courts of Marbella, question marks lie over whether Carlos Alcaraz will be in action. The world number one is on the entry list, but having just won the US Open final against Jannik Sinner 3,600 miles (5,800km) away in New York City, is a doubt.
If Alcaraz does not play on home soil, compatriot Alejandro Davidovich Fokina will be on hand to tackle the Danish side led by Holger Rune, who won his sole title of the year on clay at the Barcelona Open ATP 500.
USA may have suffered from a double withdrawal of Ben Shelton and Tommy Paul, but remain a strong squad with world number five Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe.
Opponents Czechia are not to be underestimated, with rising star Jakub Menšík one of three Czech singles players inside the top 25 along with Jiří Lehečka and Olympic mixed doubles champion Tomáš Macháč.
Top 10 player Alex de Minaur is back representing Australia aiming to add to his 16 wins in the gold-and-green kit, as they take on Belgium. Keep an eye out for former Grand Slam champion Marin Čilić of Croatia when they meet France, while another Olympic medallist in Nishikori Kei brings valuable experience for Japan against Germany.
The other ties see 2024 runners-up Netherlands host Argentina, led by Francisco Cerúndolo, while European neighbours Hungary and Austria go face-to-face.
